Doha: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Saturday criticized efforts to integrate the PKK/YPG terrorist organization, operating under the name of SDF in Syria, into the Syrian army, emphasizing that the group's sole objective is to target Trkiye. Speaking during a 'Newsmaker Interview' session at the 23rd Doha Forum in the Qatari capital, Fidan responded to questions from Patrick Wintour, diplomatic editor of The Guardian. According to Anadolu Agency - English, Fidan highlighted that the SDF, as part of the PKK, includes elements specifically positioned to fight against Trkiye. He demanded the immediate removal of non-Syrian elements from the SDF, specifically those from Iraq, Iran, and Trkiye. Fidan stressed the importance of Syria for Trkiye, noting that developments in Syria or Iraq have direct implications for Trkiye. Fidan further pointed out that all capacities and units positioned against Trkiye's interests and security should be abolished. He mentioned that while Trkiye can manage certain burde ns, the humanitarian crisis in Syria has become unbearable, prompting President Erdogan to adopt an open-door policy for those fleeing the Assad regime. Iran and Russia's strong backing of the Syrian regime, the challenging years of 2016-2017, and the eventual fading of international support for the Syrian opposition, leaving Trkiye and Qatar largely unsupported as the US and West shifted toward aiding the PKK, were also highlighted by Fidan. Fidan noted that both Ankara and Damascus have consistently conveyed their expectations to the SDF, suggesting that the group and the Syrian government might reach an arrangement as a sovereign decision by Damascus. He emphasized the complexity of the SDF's talks with the regime, given the integration of tens of thousands of fighters, and stressed the need for genuine engagement from both sides. Reflecting on his tenure as intelligence chief, Fidan recalled past negotiations with the PKK leadership, which were close to an understanding but later abandoned by the PKK d ue to developments in Syria. He expressed hope that Abdullah Ocalan could play a role in the process, though uncertain of his willingness or leverage. Fidan also addressed Trkiye's readiness to support Palestine, including potential ISF deployment, highlighting cooperation with Indonesia, Azerbaijan, and other Muslim and Arab countries. He stressed the importance of US President Trump's involvement and the need for international action against Israeli violations and violence. On the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Fidan warned against targeting trade routes in the Black Sea, which could escalate the war. He touched upon the US national security strategy's reference to a future NATO with fewer European members, attributing Europe's push for its security architecture to this longstanding debate. Praising Qatar's role as a global mediator, Fidan underscored the Doha Forum's significance in addressing regional issues and the strengthening partnership between Trkiye and Qatar.
