Russia Feeling Pressure from Latest Sanctions, Macron Says Ahead of Ukraine Talks in London

London: Russia is beginning to feel the impact of Western sanctions, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday, arguing that mounting economic pressure is strengthening Ukraine ahead of crucial peace talks in London. Speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy before the meeting that will also include British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron said the sanctions imposed in recent months by the EU and the United States were now significantly affecting Russia's economy.

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron emphasized that the resistance of Ukraine in the ongoing conflict, coupled with the economic strain on Russia following the latest sanctions from the EU and the US, is pivotal. He noted that this pressure has created momentum for coordinated diplomatic engagement among the involved nations. Macron highlighted the necessity of aligning European, Ukrainian, and US positions to conclude the peace negotiations under terms that are acceptable for Ukraine, Europe, and collective security.

Starmer, who is hosting the talks, reiterated Europe's unwavering support for Ukraine, emphasizing the need for a just and lasting ceasefire. He pointed out that the principles guiding European support for Ukraine have been consistent over a long period. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz acknowledged that the outcome of the negotiations is uncertain but stressed the importance of Europe's steadfast backing for Ukraine. He expressed skepticism about some details in US documents but reinforced Europe's commitment to Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the European leaders for organizing the meeting and emphasized the significance of such discussions to address sensitive issues. He underscored the importance of unity between Europe and Ukraine, as well as between Europe, Ukraine, and the US, in making critical decisions. Zelenskyy highlighted the indispensable role of both American and European support in managing the challenges faced by Ukraine.
