Washington: Elon Musk, the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) during the early months of the second Trump administration, expressed in a recent interview that he would likely not take on the role again, describing his time there as only 'a little bit successful.'
According to Anadolu Agency, Musk shared these reflections during a YouTube podcast with Katie Miller, a former aide to President Donald Trump. Musk defended the initiative, asserting that it helped eliminate what he described as 'entirely wasteful' spending. He claimed that DOGE was 'somewhat successful' in halting funding for projects that, in his view, lacked justification.
The initiative, however, was not without controversy. It faced criticism for claiming savings that were either illusory or derived from already canceled programs. The group also faced issues when it fired workers, only to rehire them after realizing their positions were essential, including those related to nuclear safety.
An analysis by Wall Street Journal Federal in April revealed that, despite DOGE's reported cost-cutting efforts, government spending had increased since Trump took office. The purported savings, which were claimed to be in the billions or even trillions, were called into question.
When Musk was asked if he would consider leading DOGE again, he responded that he would have preferred to focus on his companies instead. He also referenced public opposition to his efforts, mentioning incidents of arson and vandalism at Tesla dealerships.
DOGE, launched shortly after President Trump's inauguration, aimed to rapidly cut federal government spending. Musk and his team, many of whom were young tech workers with no governmental experience, targeted what they deemed unnecessary programs and advocated for large-scale layoffs and buyouts. However, Congress holds the constitutional power over spending, leading to legal and political challenges against several of DOGE's decisions.
The initiative also faced backlash for its impacts on agencies like the US Agency for International Development, which critics argued would have severe consequences for impoverished populations globally. Bill Gates notably criticized the shutdown, suggesting that it was detrimental to the world's poorest children.
Musk's approach, which included a public demonstration with a chainsaw symbolizing bureaucratic cuts, drew further criticism. Following his departure from the White House, tensions arose between him and Trump, with Musk criticizing tax laws and Trump threatening to withdraw federal subsidies from Tesla and SpaceX.
Despite these conflicts, recent developments indicate a reconciliation between Musk and Trump. Musk's attendance at a White House dinner with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman suggests a mending of their relationship. Trump acknowledged their dispute over electric vehicle subsidies but expressed a positive view of Musk, stating, 'I like Elon a lot.'
