Khartoum: More than 200 medical workers have been killed, hundreds wounded, and others remain missing in Sudan since the conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) erupted in April 2023, a local medical group reported Thursday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Sudan Doctors Network stated that it has recorded the deaths of over 234 medical workers since the onset of the war, along with more than 507 injuries. Additionally, 59 medical staff are reported missing. The group highlighted that 73 medical workers are detained in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, under what it described as 'extremely poor conditions' in areas controlled by the RSF.

The Sudan Doctors Network has called upon the international community and humanitarian organizations to take immediate action to ensure the protection of healthcare workers and secure their safe access. The group described the ongoing actions as a breach of international laws that guarantee the protection of medical personnel during armed conflicts. It also urged all parties involved in the conflict to cease violations, protect medical staff, release detainees, and disclose the fate of the missing.

There has been no immediate response from Sudanese authorities or the RSF regarding the statement. The RSF controls all five states of the Darfur region in the west, except some northern parts of North Darfur, which remain under army control. The army, meanwhile, maintains control over most areas of the remaining 13 states in the south, north, east, and center, including the capital, Khartoum.

The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF has resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions since its inception in April 2023.
