Toronto: A Canadian federal court has overturned the government’s directive that required TikTok to cease its business operations within the country. This decision, reported by various media outlets, allows the social media giant to continue its operations while a new assessment is conducted.

According to Anadolu Agency, the ruling comes in the wake of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent trip to China, indicating possible diplomatic undertones to the decision. The legal victory for TikTok means that its offices in Canada can remain open and operational as authorities re-evaluate the situation.

The original government order was issued in November 2024, targeting TikTok Technology Canada Inc. after a national security review. The review, conducted under the Investment Canada Act, highlighted concerns about ByteDance Ltd., TikTok’s parent company, and its Canadian operations. Ottawa cited risks related to the protection, management, usage, and sharing of information by foreign entities as reasons for the directive.

The court’s decision specifically impacts TikTok’s corporate operations in Canada, while Canadian users have continued to access the app without interruption. As of now, neither ByteDance nor TikTok has issued an official response to the court’s ruling.
