Ankara: Twenty-two people were reported dead on Saturday after a migrant boat was rescued off the Greek island of Crete.

According to Anadolu Agency, the vessel was spotted early Friday by the EU border agency Frontex, leading to the rescue of 26 people who were subsequently transferred to the port of Kaloi Limenes.

Survivors recounted that the boat originally departed from Libya with 48 individuals on board six days prior to being found. The journey was marred by adverse weather conditions, causing the vessel to drift aimlessly for several days. Tragically, 22 passengers perished during the ordeal, and their bodies were cast into the sea.

Authorities have identified and arrested two individuals suspected of operating the boat. The suspects, both from South Sudan and aged between 19 and 21, are now facing human trafficking charges. The preliminary investigation continues as officials seek to gather more information about the ill-fated journey.
