London: Amnesty International has urged the UK government to cease its military support to the United States amid rising tensions with Iran, highlighting the potential risks to civilians due to recent US threats.

According to Anadolu Agency, Amnesty International UK's Crisis Response Manager Kristyan Benedict emphasized the severity of the situation, describing it as a 'moment of extreme danger for civilians in Iran and the wider region.' The appeal comes in response to provocative remarks by US President Trump, who suggested the possibility of widespread destruction, which Benedict characterized as 'genocidal language.'

Benedict cited a recent US airstrike that resulted in the deaths of over 168 people, including more than 100 children, at a school in Minab, Iran. He pointed out that strategic infrastructure such as bridges and energy facilities are being targeted, stressing that allowing the US to utilize British military bases implicates the UK in potential violations of international law, including war crimes.

Amnesty International unequivocally condemns any threats to systematically dismantle civilian infrastructure, noting such actions would constitute war crimes. The organization insists that the UK must clearly oppose these threats and reassess its military alliance with the US, particularly in light of President Trump's ultimatum to Iran concerning the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

The geopolitical landscape has been fraught since the US and Israel launched an offensive against Iran on February 28, which resulted in over 1,400 fatalities, including the death of Iran's then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has conducted drone and missile strikes affecting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states with US military installations, leading to significant casualties, infrastructural damage, and disruptions in global markets and aviation.
