Tokyo: Almost all NATO ambassadors are set to undertake an unprecedented trip to Japan later this month to understand how Tokyo manages US demands while maintaining good relations with Washington.

According to Anadolu Agency, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported Thursday that this visit comes at a time when US President Donald Trump is increasingly frustrated with NATO, prompting the organization to explore ways to keep the US engaged.

Japan holds a significant position as one of the US’ oldest military allies in the Asia-Pacific region, hosting over 50,000 American troops and various military assets. The report highlights that ambassadors from nearly all 32 NATO member states will join the trip, marking a visit of unprecedented scale.

The agenda for the envoys includes meetings with Japanese Cabinet ministers to discuss issues such as dealing with China, which has been strengthening military ties with Russia. Additionally, the envoys will engage with business leaders to explore defense industry cooperation and will visit a US base in Yokosuka, located in southern Tokyo.

The delegation extends its visit to include South Korea, although there has been no official confirmation about the visit or its agenda. The Mission of Japan to NATO was inaugurated in January 2025 in Brussels, serving as an independent mission separate from the Embassy of Japan in Belgium.
