Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated the United States on achieving a two-week ceasefire with Iran, emphasizing the necessity for continued arms support to Ukraine. Zelenskyy conveyed his message during an interview with Italian broadcaster Rai, which was published late Wednesday.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy expressed optimism that the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran would aid in addressing the ongoing energy crisis. He emphasized the importance of sustained support for Ukraine through arms supplies, highlighting that the US had previously been more focused on Middle Eastern affairs, which had postponed negotiations involving Russia. Zelenskyy noted that these talks would resume shortly.
Zelenskyy reiterated his readiness to engage in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, suggesting potential venues for such talks in the Middle East, Europe, and the US, while dismissing Moscow and Kyiv as feasible options. He emphasized the need for security guarantees for Ukraine, involving the presence of European and US representatives.
Discussing the prospect of elections in Ukraine, Zelenskyy pointed out that current laws prohibit such activities during wartime, stressing the need to ensure the security of civilians and military personnel involved in the voting process. He also expressed his hope for the reinstatement of US sanctions on Russian oil, rejecting any discussions that might lead to ceding control of strategic regions like Donbas to Russia.
Zelenskyy underscored the potential timeline and costs associated with building new fortifications, noting the risk of attacks on key cities like Kharkiv, which play significant roles in Ukraine’s economy. He warned of the societal divisions that could arise from these challenges.
The Ukrainian president also reflected on his relationship with US President Donald Trump, asserting that he maintains a candid rapport with Trump, one that allows him to express his honest opinions, even when they differ from those of the US president.
