Kyiv: Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced plans to accumulate 14.6 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas in preparation for the upcoming winter. The statement was made after a crisis committee meeting that included representatives from fuel and energy sector companies.

According to Anadolu Agency, Shmyhal shared on Telegram that a forecast balance for natural gas supply and distribution was approved for the 2026-2027 heating season. The baseline scenario aims for 14.6 bcm of gas to be stored in underground facilities before the start of the heating season.

Shmyhal emphasized that the forecast could be adjusted based on the security situation in Ukraine. He noted that previous heating seasons serve as a reference for their current plans. The minister highlighted the importance of having a minimum of 13.2 bcm of gas in underground storage before the heating season begins to ensure stability during low temperatures and potential attacks.

The critically needed minimum of 13.2 bcm is set to allow Ukraine to manage the winter season effectively. Shmyhal also mentioned that Naftogaz and the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine are actively working on securing import capacities and maintaining supply routes via the Vertical Gas Corridor.
