Khartoum: Sudan's Emergency Lawyers announced on Saturday that a drone strike conducted by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) resulted in the deaths of five civilians. The attack targeted a civilian vehicle west of Khartoum, the capital.
According to Anadolu Agency, the group released a statement detailing that the RSF drone targeted a civilian car on Jumu'iyyah Road in southern rural Omdurman. The vehicle was coming from the Sheikh al-Siddiq area in White Nile state when it was struck. Tragically, all five passengers in the vehicle were killed in the attack.
Sudan has been embroiled in conflict since April 2023, with clashes between the army and the RSF arising from disagreements over military integration. This ongoing war has claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced approximately 13 million people, and pushed parts of the country toward famine, creating one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises.
The group highlighted that this incident exemplifies a pattern of attacks targeting civilians in public and populated areas, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and posing increased risks to civilian life. They held the RSF fully accountable for the attack and the resulting civilian casualties.
The statement condemned the attack as a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, which mandates civilian protection and prohibits their targeting under any circumstances. It emphasized the importance of distinguishing between military and civilian targets and called such acts serious crimes warranting accountability.
The rights group urged an immediate cessation of indiscriminate attacks on civilians and advocated for ensuring their full protection. They called for securing roads and residential areas to prevent the recurring targeting of innocent lives and to reinforce adherence to civilian protection rules during conflicts.
