Israeli Strikes in Southern Lebanon Result in Fatalities Amid Ceasefire Extension

Beirut: At least seven people were killed and several others injured in Israeli artillery shelling and airstrikes in southern Lebanon despite the recent extension of a ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Israeli artillery targeted the vicinity of the Srebbine junction in the Bint Jbeil district in Nabatieh province, resulting in one fatality and injuring another individual. Additionally, Israeli warplanes conducted strikes on the town of Jebal al-Botm in the Tyre district and the Housh area east of the city of Tyre.

In another incident, an Israeli strike targeted a house in the town of Tayr Felsay in the Tyre district, causing an unspecified number of injuries. The National News Agency (NNA) also reported an Israeli airstrike on the al-Saha neighborhood in the town of Habboush in the Nabatieh district, where a couple was killed after their home was destroyed.

An additional Israeli airstrike hit a house in the town of Tebnine, resulting in the death of Haidar Mawasi, the former Aitaroun mayor and a current municipal council member. The strike on Tebnine also led to injuries and significant destruction.

Another attack in the town of Tayr Felsay claimed the lives of a woman and her son, who was a paramedic with the Islamic Risala Scout Association emergency unit. Five others were injured in this attack and were taken to hospitals in Tyre.

Rescue teams are actively working to remove rubble and recover additional bodies from the targeted buildings. In the town of Abbassiyeh, rescue teams recovered a body following an Israeli strike that targeted the town square in the Tyre district.

Prior to these strikes, the Israeli army had targeted nearly 100 areas in southern Lebanon and issued evacuation warnings for residents of nine villages and towns in anticipation of planned strikes. These developments occurred just one day after the United States announced the extension of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon for 45 days, starting May 17, following discussions in Washington.

Since March 2, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people, injuries to nearly 9,000, and the displacement of over 1.6 million individuals, which accounts for about one-fifth of the country's population, as reported by Lebanese officials.
