Putin’s China Visit to Strengthen Bilateral Ties and Strategic Cooperation

Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit China on May 19-20, following an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping, just a week after US President Donald Trump's state visit to Beijing. The Kremlin made the announcement on Saturday, highlighting the significance of this diplomatic engagement.

According to Anadolu Agency, the discussions between Putin and Xi will focus on enhancing bilateral relations and exploring ways to deepen the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and China. The two leaders are expected to address key international and regional issues and are likely to sign a joint statement following their talks. Additionally, several bilateral intergovernmental and interdepartmental agreements are anticipated to be signed during the visit.

The Kremlin's statement also mentioned that President Putin will meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang to discuss trade and economic cooperation. This visit also marks the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation between the two nations, underscoring the longstanding relationship between Moscow and Beijing.

Putin and Xi are scheduled to participate in the opening ceremony of the Russia-China Years of Education (2026-2027), further solidifying their commitment to collaborative initiatives. Meanwhile, China's Foreign Ministry confirmed the visit, noting its timing shortly after President Trump's engagement with Chinese officials in Beijing.

In recent years, bilateral trade between Russia and China has seen substantial growth, exceeding $200 billion in 2025. Additionally, China's Foreign Minister Wang emphasized the mutual interest of China and the US in achieving an early resolution to the Ukraine conflict, expressing willingness to continue dialogue to promote peace talks.
