Italian Premier Meloni Hails European Backing for Migrant Return Hubs

Rome: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed approval for a declaration adopted by the 46 member states of the Council of Europe, which signifies a shift in Europe's migration policy.

According to Anadolu Agency, Meloni highlighted the 'Chisinau Declaration' in a social media post on the platform X, stating that it acknowledges the legitimacy of innovative solutions for managing migration flows. This includes the concept of return hubs in third countries, a model pioneered by Italy in collaboration with Albania.

Meloni labeled the adoption of this declaration as a crucial achievement, attributing it to the efforts initiated by Italy alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. She remarked that these policies, which were previously deemed controversial, have now gained acceptance among the Council of Europe's member states.

The declaration underscores the Italian government's approach to managing migration flows as a principle now embraced by Europe. It supports the use of new measures like return hubs in third countries to control irregular migration. While advocates believe it aids governments in managing migration, critics argue it could undermine protections for migrants and asylum seekers.
