Belgium’s Flemish Broadcaster Considers Withdrawing from Eurovision Over EBU Policies

Brussels: Belgium's Flemish public broadcaster VRT announced on Saturday that it may not send an artist to the next Eurovision Song Contest unless the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) revises its participation policies.

According to Anadolu Agency, a statement from VRT included comments from spokesperson Yasmine Van der Borght, who emphasized that the broadcaster expects the EBU to adopt a clear position against war and violence, as well as to create an inclusive framework that respects human rights. Van der Borght noted, "Under the current circumstances, it is unlikely that VRT will send an artist next year."

The broadcaster highlighted ongoing discussions, especially concerning Israel's participation in the contest and the current decision-making processes. VRT expressed dissatisfaction with the EBU's responses to these issues. The statement further demanded "a more transparent mechanism in decision-making processes and a direct vote among EBU members."

VRT has previously voiced similar criticisms and has stated it would reconsider its participation if the EBU does not alter its approach. In Belgium, the responsibility for selecting Eurovision participants alternates between VRT and the French-language public broadcaster RTBF, with RTBF having sent Belgium's representative to this year's contest.
