Qatari and Saudi Foreign Ministers Discuss Middle East Tensions

Doha: Qatar's Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, engaged in discussions focusing on the escalating tensions in the Middle East, notably concerning the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Qatari Foreign Ministry announced via social media platform X that the phone conversation between the two ministers emphasized efforts to mitigate tensions and promote stability and security throughout the region. Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the necessity for all involved parties to respond positively to existing mediation efforts. These efforts aim to address the underlying causes of the crisis through peaceful dialogue, ultimately leading to a sustainable agreement that prevents further escalation.

The phone conversation also covered the review of bilateral relations between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, with both parties exploring avenues to strengthen their ties. The Saudi Foreign Ministry confirmed similar details late Saturday, emphasizing the collaborative efforts to maintain regional stability and security.

The discussions come in the wake of heightened regional tensions since February 28, when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran. Iran's response included retaliatory strikes targeting Israel and US allies in the Gulf, in addition to the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Although a ceasefire was established on April 8 through mediation by Pakistan, subsequent talks in Islamabad failed to achieve a lasting agreement. However, US President Donald Trump later announced an indefinite extension of the truce.
