UK and Poland Forge New Security and Defense Partnership

London: Britain and Poland have entered into a significant security and defense partnership treaty aimed at strengthening bilateral ties in these domains, alongside cooperation in energy and economic security. The accord was signed by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk following discussions held in London.

According to Anadolu Agency, the newly signed treaty focuses on enhancing cooperation on foreign and security policy, defense, and security, explicitly addressing national, economic, energy, and climate security cooperation. The agreement underscores the commitment of both parties to bolster their close collaboration in security and defense, preparing to tackle the challenges that affect both nations and Europe at large.

In the treaty, both London and Warsaw identified Russia as the "most significant long-term threat" to European security, emphasizing the necessity to counter Russia's "malign actions." The leaders expressed their determination to address these challenges by deepening their cooperation as neighboring European countries and NATO Allies, grounded in their strong interconnections, shared history, values, and interests.

The treaty reiterates the UK and Poland's "ironclad commitment" to NATO as the cornerstone of their security and the foundation of collective defense in the Euro-Atlantic area. It also emphasizes their dedication to European unity and responsibility in security and defense matters. The two countries have pledged to enhance their collaboration in international security and foreign policy to promote global peace and security.

Building upon a 2017 treaty and a 2023 joint declaration, the parties agreed to advance their defense cooperation to fortify the security of the Euro-Atlantic region, acknowledging the intertwined nature of regional security with their national security. They also recognized the benefits of aligning defense industrial and export strategies, ensuring a reliable supply chain for national programs and fostering future partnerships between defense companies.

Polish Prime Minister Tusk celebrated the signing of the Northolt Treaty on social media, declaring, "Long live the Polish-British alliance!" Meanwhile, Prime Minister Starmer's Office highlighted that the treaty "strengthens our cooperation, boosts joint capabilities, and reinforces our commitment to NATO. Standing together, we are secure at home and strong abroad."
