Beirut: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated on Monday that the US-mediated negotiations with Israel require time, emphasizing that the ongoing conflict will not be resolved quickly. "Negotiation is safer than war. We have seen -- and continue to see -- the devastation of war and its consequences," Aoun remarked during a meeting with business representatives, as noted in a presidency statement. He stressed that negotiations are a process and not an immediate solution, highlighting the importance of diplomacy over conflict.

According to Anadolu Agency, Aoun asserted that negotiations do not signify surrender but are a strategic means to end wars while minimizing damage. He reiterated Lebanon's commitment to these talks, noting that progress is being made, although delays are possible. Aoun mentioned that while the Lebanese army has not declared southern Lebanon completely demilitarized, it has established control over the area, acknowledging the geographical challenges that hinder the removal of weapons.

President Aoun criticized Israel for not adhering to the ceasefire agreement, explaining that Israel was expected to withdraw from occupied positions but has continued military operations under the guise of self-defense. Despite a ceasefire effective from April 17, extended for 45 days through US-mediated indirect talks, Israel persists in its attacks on Lebanon. The conflict involves frequent exchanges of fire between the Israeli army and the Lebanese group Hezbollah.

The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that since March 2, Israeli attacks have resulted in the death of over 3,400 people across Lebanon.
