Ankara: US President Donald Trump on Monday announced a scheduled meeting with Iran in the Qatari capital, Doha, claiming that Iran has requested the dialogue. "Iran requested a meeting. It will take place tomorrow in Doha," Trump stated in a brief post on his Truth Social account.
According to Anadolu Agency, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi countered this assertion by stating that no technical talks with the US are scheduled this week in Doha. However, he acknowledged that consultations with mediators are ongoing. Earlier reports from Axios indicated that the US and Iran had agreed to address their differences over the Strait of Hormuz following recent military strikes and the subsequent closure of the strait by Tehran.
The White House announced that envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will travel to Doha to participate in the meeting, which aims to discuss a memorandum of understanding. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed to Fox News that these discussions would occur alongside technical negotiations. Leavitt emphasized the US's commitment to the peace process but maintained that Washington reserves the right to respond with military force if necessary. She expressed optimism for a definitive agreement, highlighting that any deal must prioritize US interests.
The anticipated meeting arises amidst heightened tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, following the Islamabad Memorandum and technical talks in Switzerland aimed at ending the conflict with Iran. President Trump reiterated the significance of the upcoming meeting, stating, "The meeting in Doha is going to be perhaps important, perhaps not. We're going to find out." He also underscored the US's stance against Iran developing nuclear weapons.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei insisted that no negotiations with the US are planned at any level in the coming days, reaffirming Iran's focus on implementing the memorandum of understanding to conclude the ongoing war.
