Sanaa: Moldovan President Maia Sandu held talks with Indian President Droupadi Murmu in Chisinau on Monday, with the two leaders agreeing to deepen bilateral cooperation, state-run Moldpres reported. Murmu's visit marked the first by an Indian head of state to Moldova since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992.

According to Anadolu Agency, during a joint news conference, President Sandu announced that Moldova and India are on the verge of signing a new cooperation agreement focused on higher education, a move aimed at strengthening academic ties between the two nations. This is significant as approximately 1,400 Indian students are currently enrolled in Moldovan universities. Sandu emphasized Moldova's ambition to expand its cooperation with India across various sectors, including trade, investment, energy, healthcare, information technology, and education.

President Murmu highlighted the importance of education and capacity building, describing them as among the strongest pillars of the bilateral relationship between India and Moldova. She revealed India's intention to double the number of training opportunities and scholarships for Moldovan professionals, further solidifying educational ties. The discussions also included plans to enhance cooperation in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence and cyber diplomacy.

The bilateral relationship between India and Moldova has seen increased momentum in recent years. Political consultations resumed in New Delhi in October 2024 after a 21-year break, marking a significant milestone in diplomatic relations. Additionally, Moldova established its embassy in New Delhi in December 2024, while India opened its market to Moldovan apples in February 2025.
