Zurich: Dozens of Swiss glaciers could disappear as the country faces what is likely to be its second-most severe glacier melt on record, broadcaster Swissinfo reported Thursday. Glaciologist Matthias Huss has indicated that the situation is critical, with many small glaciers at risk of vanishing by the end of the year.

According to Anadolu Agency, Huss conveyed to the Keystone-SDA news agency that the ice on approximately 20 to 30 glaciers could completely disappear this year. The alarming rate of melting is attributed to low snow cover on glaciers following winter and the early onset of intense summer heat.

These factors are significantly contributing to the rapid melting of the glaciers, posing a threat to the Swiss landscape and potentially affecting the regional climate and water resources.
