Tehran: Iran has strongly condemned a new series of US economic and trade sanctions imposed against it, labeling the measures as 'economic terrorism.'

According to Anadolu Agency, the Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement criticizing the sanctions as part of a long-standing history of hostility from American politicians, spanning 73 years, toward the Iranian populace. The ministry asserted that the US sanctions infringe upon the fundamental human rights of Iranian citizens, equating them to economic terrorism and crimes against humanity.

The statement further expressed that those responsible for creating and enforcing these sanctions should face legal action and punishment. The ministry highlighted that the sanctions follow what it described as two 'American-Zionist wars on Iran,' with Washington failing to compel Iran to accept what were termed as 'illegitimate and inhumane demands.'

Additionally, the ministry commented on the dual nature of US tactics, suggesting that economic pressure is akin to warfare, posing a threat to international peace and security. Iran, as per the statement, remains resolute in safeguarding its national interests against various forms of US pressure.

The announcement came after US President Donald Trump revealed plans for 'the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,' aiming to intensify his maximum-pressure campaign on Iran. President Trump emphasized cutting off financial channels to Tehran and warned other nations of severe consequences should they assist Iran economically.

President Trump characterized the campaign as an 'Economic D-Day,' urging allies to support this initiative to further isolate Tehran economically.
