Ankara: A statement by the terrorist group YPG announcing the dissolution of its so-called autonomous administration in neighboring Syria and all affiliated military and civilian structures will be a positive development if implemented in practice, said the Turkish foreign minister on Wednesday.
According to Anadolu Agency, Hakan Fidan, speaking from Elazig, eastern Trkiye, emphasized that verifying the dissolution on the ground is essential and, if confirmed, it would support the steps Trkiye aims to take. Fidan highlighted that this development would bolster Kurdish-Arab relations in Syria and contribute significantly to fostering an environment where Syrians can anticipate a confident future.
Fidan stressed the importance of preserving Syria's national unity and territorial integrity while protecting Kurdish identity. He noted that the YPG's presence has been a longstanding issue for both Syria and Trkiye but expressed hope for resolving these challenges through mutual understanding, dialogue, and peace.
Fidan, who spent time traveling through the region, remarked on the potential for accelerated regional development in the absence of terrorism. He noted the importance of regional progress and the unique opportunities eastern and southeastern Trkiye offer when free from conflict.
Trkiye's vision, under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's leadership, focuses on peace, stability, development, and prosperity across Trkiye, Syria, Iraq, and the broader region. Fidan stated that the statement from Damascus holds promise if its terms are put into practice.
During his visit to Elazig, a city he referred to as "sacred," Fidan held discussions with local officials and praised the province's recovery post-2023 earthquakes. He highlighted the reconstruction efforts and improvements in economic conditions and investment as positive signs of progress.
Before visiting Elazig, Fidan joined President Erdogan in Ahlat for the 955th anniversary of the Battle of Malazgirt. He reflected on Anatolia's rich history as a home to diverse peoples and emphasized the significance of Trkiye's role in the region amidst modern geopolitical challenges. Fidan expressed pride in Elazig's historical and contemporary contributions.
