Vilnius: EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Monday expressed concern about the increasing influence of political parties that she described as 'blind' to the dangers posed by Russia, following the far-right Alternative for Germany's (AfD) recent victory in a regional election.

According to Anadolu Agency, Kallas voiced her apprehensions during a visit to Lithuania, where she was speaking alongside Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius. She highlighted the growing proximity of threats such as sabotage to Europe and warned that parties dismissive of these threats are gaining traction.

The AfD achieved a significant win, securing approximately 44% of the vote in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt's election on Sunday. This result more than doubled their support from the previous state election in 2021. The AfD's performance surpassed that of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which garnered around 17%. However, the AfD did not achieve the majority required to establish Germany's first far-right state government since World War II.

Kallas expressed her fears, stating, "So I'm just afraid that we could wake up in a situation where we haven't done enough to deter threats and defend ourselves." She acknowledged the sovereignty of the German electorate, noting, "But of course, the German people themselves, a democratic country, have to make their own choices."
