New York:Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed 'deep concern' over the ongoing US-Iran conflict, highlighting the importance of continued diplomatic efforts to achieve lasting peace.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sharif made these remarks during a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New York, where both leaders attended the 81st UN General Assembly. The discussions focused on the regional situation and emphasized the need for restraint, de-escalation, and sustained diplomatic engagement, as per a statement from Sharif's office.

The conflict, which began in February when the US and Israel initiated military actions against Iran, has seen Pakistan and Qatar play significant roles in mediating and de-escalating tensions. Islamabad helped secure a framework agreement on June 18, which was signed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, US President Donald Trump, and Prime Minister Sharif. The deal provided a basis for further negotiations to end the hostilities.

Prime Minister Sharif reiterated Pakistan's commitment to supporting regional peace and the implementation of the framework agreement. He also noted Pakistan's role as a mediator between Iran and the United States, stressing the country's determination to facilitate progress towards de-escalation.

Despite these efforts, retaliatory strikes have continued, and tensions remain high. However, indirect talks between American and Iranian negotiators took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, offering a glimmer of hope for renewed diplomatic engagement.
