Djokovic Advances to China Open Final After Medvedev’s Disqualification

Beijing:Novak Djokovic moved on to the China Open final after Daniil Medvedev was disqualified for hitting a spectator with a ball during their semifinal match.

According to Anadolu Agency, the incident occurred while Djokovic was leading 7-5, 5-3. Medvedev, after losing a point, hit a ball that rebounded from the back wall, striking a spectator in the front row in the eye. The spectator was assisted out of the stands, leading to Medvedev's default.

Djokovic expressed his shock at the decision and extended his sympathy to both the spectator and Medvedev. Reflecting on his own experience of being disqualified at the 2020 US Open, he empathized with Medvedev, stating, "I also feel sorry for Daniil. I know exactly how he feels to be disqualified in a big match."

This victory maintained Djokovic's unbeaten record at the China Open, bringing it to 33-0, and secured his spot in the seventh final in Beijing. He will compete against Alex de Minaur in the final after the Australian advanced when Hubert Hurkacz retired due to an adductor injury.

In the women's draw, eighth-seed Iga Swiatek made an impressive comeback to defeat Donna Vekic 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 and reach the last 16. Despite trailing 5-2 in the second set, Swiatek managed to break Vekic twice, level the set, and dominate the tiebreak. She then controlled the third set, completing her victory in two hours and 40 minutes. Swiatek is set to face American Iva Jovic in the next round.
