Zaporizhzhia:Two facilities at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant were damaged in an overnight attack, according to Russia's state nuclear corporation, Rosatom.
According to Anadolu Agency, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev reported that the damage occurred to a laboratory building located about 200 meters from the plant's fourth and fifth reactors, as well as to a radioactive waste processing facility. Despite the damage to the roofs, Likhachev assured that there is no threat to nuclear safety.
Plant workers continue to maintain the facility's main equipment in safe condition despite the ongoing attacks. Rosatom has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about the need for repairs and has called for a temporary ceasefire to carry out the necessary work. Likhachev emphasized the risk involved in transformer repairs under these circumstances, highlighting the need to avoid endangering repair crews.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe's largest and among the world's ten largest, remains at the center of tensions due to persistent fears of a potential nuclear disaster. Both Moscow and Kyiv have frequently accused each other of conducting attacks around the facility, which has been under Russian control since March 2022. Since September 1, 2022, IAEA personnel have been stationed at the plant.
