Irkutsk:Indonesia has increased health surveillance measures at international entry points after reports emerged of a suspected plague-linked death in Russia. A laboratory worker in Russia reportedly died from pneumonia potentially associated with the plague.
According to Anadolu Agency, Indonesia's Health Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and has enhanced preparedness at airports and seaports. Aji Muhawarman, head of the Health Ministry's Bureau of Communication and Public Information, stated that despite the lack of an international alert from the International Health Regulations National Focal Point or the World Health Organization, authorities are taking precautionary steps.
These steps include health declarations through the SATUSEHAT Health Pass system and monitoring travelers for symptoms such as fever, coughing, or shortness of breath. Risk-based assessments of incoming vessels and surveillance of rodents and fleas are also being intensified.
Travelers exhibiting symptoms may be referred to designated infectious disease hospitals for isolation and treatment. The measures are a response to the death of a 28-year-old employee of Russia's Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Siberia, who reportedly died from 'pneumonia of unknown etiology.' Russian authorities have indicated that tests did not find any microorganisms related to her work activities. Nearly 200 contacts have been placed under medical observation as investigations continue.
