Riyadh:Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi declared during discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that Iraq will not permit its territory to be used for launching attacks against Saudi Arabia or other regional countries. This statement was reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
According to Anadolu Agency, al-Zaidi emphasized Iraq's dedication to maintaining good-neighborly relations and respecting the sovereignty of Iraq and other nations. These remarks were made during his inaugural visit to Saudi Arabia since assuming office in May.
The Iraqi leader condemned the assault on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, along with other attacks that harm civilians and infrastructure, warning that such actions jeopardize regional security and stability. The talks between the two leaders focused on regional developments and strategies to enhance security and stability, as well as reviewing relations and expanding cooperation, particularly in security coordination to address regional challenges.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reiterated Saudi Arabia's support for Iraq's efforts to foster dialogue and achieve regional stability. The visit takes place amid increasing Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including a significant strike on October 10 at King Khalid International Airport, which resulted in 13 deaths and 309 injuries, as reported by Saudi authorities. Another attack the following day resulted in one death and 11 injuries.
In September, Iraqi authorities discovered a drone launch site within Iraq while investigating attacks on Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline, which had caused injuries and damage. In August, al-Zaidi established a joint security committee to address regional threats and prevent the use of Iraqi territory for launching attacks against neighboring countries.
These measures followed US-Saudi airstrikes in late July targeting Iran-aligned armed groups in Iraq. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the joint operation targeted sites linked to attacks on US forces and Saudi energy infrastructure. Saudi Arabia justified the strikes as self-defense following attacks originating from Iraqi territory against its petroleum facilities and warned of further military actions if Iran-backed groups continued their assaults.
