Nyala:Recent airstrikes by the Sudanese army in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, have caused significant losses to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to a regional government official.
According to Anadolu Agency, Ahmed Ishaq Shanab, the information minister and spokesman for the Darfur regional government, described the strikes as "painful" for the RSF, resulting in substantial damage to their personnel and equipment. The Sudanese army confirmed that the airstrikes targeted RSF command centers and other positions in Nyala, which serve as an administrative and military hub for the group. These strikes reportedly killed dozens of RSF fighters and destroyed several command centers.
Shanab further stated that the RSF is "not safe" in Nyala or elsewhere, and the army intends to continue its operations against the group, extending efforts to areas as far as Um Dafuq, near the border with the Central African Republic. He noted that military operations are ongoing, with the army gaining control over new areas, although he did not specify which ones.
In response, the RSF accused the army of conducting a drone strike on a livestock market in Nyala on Friday, claiming that the attack resulted in civilian casualties. However, it remains unclear whether this incident is connected to the army's reported operation, and the casualty figures and targeted locations have not been independently verified.
Nyala remains a key administrative and military center for the RSF and its allies in the Sudan Founding Alliance, known as Tasis. Although the RSF controls most areas in the Darfur region, the army maintains control over parts of North and West Darfur, as well as the majority of Sudan's other states.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, ongoing since April 2023, has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of millions, exacerbating an already severe humanitarian crisis.
