EU and Canada Condemn Violence by Israeli Settlers in West Bank

Taybeh:The EU and Canada have issued strong condemnations of recent attacks by violent Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, which have also targeted European diplomats. The incidents have raised concerns about the safety of both local Palestinians and international representatives in the area.

According to Anadolu Agency, the EU's diplomatic service has expressed its disapproval of the attacks, acknowledging statements of condemnation from several Israeli representatives. The EU is calling for accountability and effective measures to prevent further violence. They emphasized the need for full accountability and effective prevention of harassment against Palestinians, especially during the olive harvest season, as well as protection for journalists.

The EU has urged Israel to adhere to international humanitarian and human rights laws and to halt the expansion of illegal settlements. Meanwhile, Canada's Foreign Minister Anita Anand described an attack in Taybeh as part of a concerning pattern of settler violence that undermines peace efforts and endangers Palestinian communities. She joined the EU in condemning the attacks on diplomats from Belgium, France, and Poland.

Anand also noted that Canada welcomes the Israeli police's investigation into the incident. She highlighted Israel's responsibility, as the occupying power, to ensure accountability and protect both diplomats and civilians in the West Bank. The attack near Taybeh, east of Ramallah, took place during a delegation visit amid the olive harvest. The group included French and Belgian consuls, a Polish representative, and Catholic Church officials. Masked Israeli settlers confronted the delegation, resulting in damage to a Belgian consular vehicle.

Israeli army radio reported that security forces responded three hours after receiving the delegation's location and video evidence of the attack, which had been sent immediately. Separately, Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the opposition Yisrael Beiteinu party, criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu and his ministers for not adequately addressing settler violence, warning that their inaction could harm Israel's international support. The attacks have notably intensified during the current olive harvest season.
