Kenya Confirms Ninth Ebola Case, Traces Infections to Single Cluster

Nairobi:Kenya has confirmed a ninth case of Ebola, with all infections linked to a single cluster. This includes one death, and health officials report no evidence of transmission beyond this group.

According to Anadolu Agency, the latest patient is a 24-year-old man related to the initial case, who tested positive for Ebola on October 19 while in quarantine. He is now under isolation and treatment.

Health Director General Patrick Amoth stated that the eight surviving patients are responding well to treatment. The Ministry of Health has managed to trace and quarantine 134 out of 135 identified contacts, surpassing the international standard for contact tracing. Efforts to trace additional contacts are ongoing.

Kenya has received 500 doses of medicine and distributed protective equipment and medical supplies to 28 high-risk counties. A dedicated laboratory in Nairobi has been established to test Ebola patients, ensuring normal hospital operations are not disrupted.

The Ministry assures that no infections have occurred within quarantine facilities and continues to monitor prevention measures for health workers. Contacts quarantined since October 6 are set to return home after completing 21 days of monitoring.

Despite the outbreak, Kenya has not restricted travel, trade, or public gatherings, maintaining that the country remains open for business. The initial case involved a patient who traveled from the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda before arriving in Nairobi.

The regional health authorities are on high alert for cross-border transmission as Kenya intensifies efforts to contain the outbreak.
