Erdogan Welcomes Libyan Parliament’s Approval of Maritime Deal with Türkiye

Ankara:Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his satisfaction on Wednesday with the approval by Libya's eastern-based House of Representatives of a maritime jurisdiction agreement between Türkiye and Libya.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Erdogan announced the approval during a parliamentary group meeting of his Justice and Development (AK) Party in Ankara. He described the news from Libya as "extremely pleasing."

The Libyan House of Representatives unanimously approved the Memorandum of Understanding on the Delimitation of Maritime Jurisdiction Areas, initially signed between Türkiye and Libya's then-Government of National Accord in 2019. This decision marks a significant reversal as the parliament also repealed a 2020 resolution that had rejected the ratification of agreements signed with Türkiye.

The memorandum, signed in November 2019, aims to establish the maritime boundaries between Türkiye and Libya in the Mediterranean. Erdogan expressed hope that this decision would prove beneficial.

In addition to developments with Libya, Erdogan discussed defense cooperation involving Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. He mentioned that their joint defense agreement had been submitted to the Turkish parliament for ratification.

In response to reporters' questions after the meeting, Erdogan addressed the possibility of a visit to Damascus, stating that no date had been set for such a visit, but confirmed intentions to proceed with it.
