Manama:Bahrain and France have formalized a memorandum of understanding to enhance collaboration in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, focusing on cultivating the skills and expertise necessary for a civilian nuclear program.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the signing of the agreement took place at the conclusion of French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Manama. During his visit, Macron engaged in discussions with Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The memorandum was signed by representatives from Bahrain's Foreign Ministry and France's Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, with both leaders in attendance.
The agreement is designed to foster and maintain the expertise and capabilities required for Bahrain's civilian nuclear endeavors through specialized training initiatives. In their discussions, King Hamad and Macron also explored strengthening strategic cooperation in various fields, including investment, economic development, defense, sustainable development, and advanced technology.
The two leaders shared perspectives on regional and international issues, with a particular focus on the Middle East and ongoing efforts to address its challenges. King Hamad noted the positive developments in bilateral relations, citing a defense cooperation agreement signed during his February visit to France, which he viewed as a milestone for broader cooperation in security, energy, and technology.
Macron emphasized the importance of expanding defense capabilities and military industry cooperation. He also highlighted the need for stronger energy ties between the two nations.
Following his visit to Manama, Macron traveled to Doha, according to Qatar's state news agency QNA. His Gulf tour, scheduled from October 19 to 21, included stops in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. The French presidency stated that the tour aimed to bolster strategic and economic partnerships while promoting regional stability, energy security, and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. This diplomatic initiative occurs amid heightened regional tensions following the conflict initiated by the US and Israel against Iran, which led to Tehran's retaliatory missile and drone attacks and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz. In response, the US imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
