Former Scottish First Minister Advocates Locally Led Peace in Palestine

Istanbul:Sustainable peace in Palestine can only be achieved through a locally led long-term solution, said former First Minister of Scotland, Lord Jack McConnell. He highlighted the importance of solutions that reflect the needs, identity, and aspirations of the local population.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, McConnell, speaking at the 9th Mediation Conference in Istanbul, emphasized that lasting peace cannot be imposed from outside mandates. He cited the Bangsamoro peace process in the Philippines as a successful model of an inclusive agreement that has sustained peace by addressing historical grievances and providing autonomy.

McConnell also pointed to the experiences of Scotland and Northern Ireland as examples of governance arrangements that accommodate regional aspirations while maintaining national ties. He stressed that for peace initiatives to succeed, they must be crafted to be appropriate for the specific area, respecting local norms and cultures.
