Cairo:Egypt's House of Representatives has approved President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's proposal for military support to Saudi Arabia, as confirmed by a parliamentary statement.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the approval was granted after closed-door discussions concerning the authorization of military support to the kingdom, including the potential deployment of troops amidst rising regional tensions.
The parliamentary approval, achieved by a two-thirds majority, permits President Sisi to coordinate with Saudi Arabia on measures to protect the kingdom's territory, sovereignty, and holy sites. This decision aligns with the resolutions made by Egypt's National Defense Council in its meeting on October 18.
The parliament held closed-door sessions on October 18, 19, and 26, where lawmakers deliberated on regional developments and their impact on Egyptian and Arab national security. Representatives from various political groups and independent lawmakers participated in these discussions. However, the statement did not outline specific measures or confirm the deployment of Egyptian troops.
The decision follows escalating hostilities between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition, which supports Yemen's internationally recognized government. Saudi authorities have reported drone and missile attacks targeting areas including Riyadh and regions near the Yemeni border.
