Ermoupoli:Syros Greek authorities on the Aegean island of Syros have prohibited a planned protest against the docking of an Israeli-owned cruise ship, the Crown Iris, which was scheduled to arrive on Tuesday. The protest was initially organized by the Syros Anti-War Initiative and was planned to take place along the waterfront of the island's capital, Ermoupoli.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the Greek Coast Guard expressed concerns that the demonstration against the Crown Iris, which can accommodate up to 2,000 passengers and 650 crew members, could result in disturbances, including potential clashes between protesters and tourists.
The authorities have suggested that demonstrations could occur at alternative locations away from the waterfront to mitigate risks. They highlighted that holding the protest at the originally designated locations posed a severe threat to public security, including the potential for serious crimes against human lives, bodily integrity, and property, as well as impacting the area's social and economic activities.
The Syros Anti-War Initiative stated that the protest was intended to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and other regional communities. The group intended to communicate a message that those they consider "genocidal war criminals and their supporters" are unwelcome on the island.
