Istanbul:Cybersecurity organizations are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to identify vulnerabilities and conduct threat analyses, as demonstrated by the recent discovery of the 'PHP2Shell' vulnerability.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, the PHP vulnerability is classified as a high-severity threat, scoring 9.2 out of 10 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS). This vulnerability has allowed attackers to compromise web servers by executing code remotely.
Kubra Kalkan Cakmakci, an associate professor of computer engineering at Istanbul-based Ozyegin University, highlighted the role of AI in accelerating software debugging and evaluating vast numbers of potential errors simultaneously. She noted that AI quickly analyzed multiple layers when detecting the PHP2Shell vulnerability, surpassing human capabilities to process complexity.
Fatih Sensoy, a senior security researcher at Kaspersky, emphasized that the PHP vulnerability could expose sensitive information, such as credit card details, by compromising websites and platforms. He suggested storing personal data in an encrypted format on separate databases for added security.
Sensoy pointed out that while AI assists in detecting vulnerabilities, human experts guide the technology. He mentioned that developing a patch could take up to two to three days, stressing the importance of rapid response solutions to minimize damage from such threats.
