Gaza City:Actor Angelina Jolie, a former UN special envoy, has drawn attention to the extensive destruction in the Gaza Strip by sharing before-and-after satellite images on Instagram.
According to Anadolu Agency, these images, sourced from Google Earth, reveal the significant damage caused by the Israeli genocide across Gaza.
The images depict areas such as near the Al-Qadisiyah School in Rafah, Khan Younis in southern Gaza, and Omar Mukhtar Street in Gaza City. They show large sections of previously dense urban areas now reduced to rubble. Angelina Jolie noted that homes, schools, universities, hospitals, roads, water, and sanitation systems, along with other infrastructure, have been severely damaged or destroyed.
Citing a UN satellite analysis, Jolie reported that by June, 82% of structures in Gaza had been damaged, with two-thirds of these structures assessed as destroyed. In addition, humanitarian figures indicate that 1.98 million people, or 94% of Gaza's population, are in urgent need of shelter assistance and essential items as winter approaches.
Jolie highlighted that aid and shelter materials continue to face restrictions and delays, emphasizing that while satellite imagery illustrates the physical scale of destruction, it cannot convey the human impact. She stressed the need for humanitarian aid and medical supplies to reach civilians and called for conditions that would allow Palestinians to rebuild their homes and communities.
Jolie, who served as a UN Goodwill Ambassador and then Special Envoy for UNHCR from 2001 to 2022, stated that the destruction is evident, and the needs are known. The critical issue now is whether these needs will be addressed. Since October 2023, more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 175,000 injured, with about 90% of the enclave's infrastructure destroyed, according to Palestinian figures.
