Ankara: ASEAN leaders stated their ongoing commitment to assist Myanmar in achieving a peaceful and lasting resolution to its crisis.
According to Anadolu Agency, the leaders emphasized this commitment in a joint statement, highlighting the importance of the Five-Point Consensus established in 2021. This consensus was formed following the military coup that removed Aung San Suu Kyi from power and continues to be the key framework for addressing Myanmar's political turmoil.
The statement urged all parties involved to "immediately cease acts of violence against civilians and public facilities," appealing for restraint and the protection of civilians. The ASEAN bloc called for a continued extension and nationwide implementation of the ceasefire in Myanmar to ensure the safe and transparent distribution of humanitarian aid.
The warring factions in Myanmar had agreed to a truce, extended until May 31, in response to a devastating earthquake on March 28 that resulted in 3,800 fatalities and left tens of thousands homeless.
The Five-Point Consensus (5PC) includes a cessation of violence, provision of humanitarian aid, dialogue among all parties, the appointment of a special envoy, and the envoy's direct engagement with all stakeholders.
