Barcelona: Barcelona announced Tuesday the signing of Spanish midfielder Rodri from Manchester City on a four-year contract.
According to Anadolu Agency, "FC Barcelona and Manchester City have reached an agreement for the transfer of Rodrigo Hern¡ndez Cascante, known in the football world as Rodri, who is committing to the Catalan club until 30 June 2030," Barcelona stated in a release. The 30-year-old midfielder, who was in the final year of his contract with Manchester City, joined Hansi Flick's Barcelona squad for a reported fee of £65.4 million ($88.56 million). Barcelona reportedly outmaneuvered rivals Real Madrid to secure his signature.
Rodri's football achievements include captaining Spain to victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he was also named the tournament's best player. He was honored with the 2024 Ballon d'Or and was a key player in Spain's 2024 European Championship triumph. His addition is expected to strengthen Barcelona's midfield, which currently features players like Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Fermin Lopez, and Frenkie de Jong.
Before his stint at Manchester City, Rodri played for Villarreal and Atletico Madrid. He joined Manchester City in 2019, making 298 appearances over seven seasons, and contributed to the team's success with 12 major trophies, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups, and the 2023 UEFA Champions League.
Rodri's last two seasons in England were marred by injuries. He missed more than seven months due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury in September 2024 and later faced knee and hamstring issues. Prior to his move to Barcelona, he underwent minor back surgery.
