Santiago: Chilean President Gabriel Boric and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier met in Santiago to discuss pressing global issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and matters of international trade. The discussions took place at La Moneda Palace, where both leaders expressed their concerns and outlined their positions on these critical issues.
According to Anadolu Agency, President Boric emphasized Chile’s deep concern over global conflicts, specifically mentioning the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. He highlighted the importance of international law as a cornerstone for achieving stability and lasting peace. Boric firmly stated that any peace negotiations regarding the Ukraine conflict must recognize Russia as the aggressor and Ukraine as the victim, underscoring the necessity of respecting international law to prevent future invasions.
President Steinmeier expressed gratitude towards Chile for its stance on the Ukraine situation and reiterated Europe’s unwavering support for Kyiv. He stre
ssed the importance of deepening cooperation between Europe and Chile, citing the challenges to the multilateral order. Steinmeier also advocated for a free trade agreement between the European Union and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) to bolster economic ties between Europe and South America.
Steinmeier’s visit to Chile was part of a broader South American tour, which included Uruguay and Paraguay, aimed at strengthening Germany’s diplomatic and economic relations in the region.
