Cyprus protests to UK media outlet for misrepresenting Turkish Cypriot leader as “president”

Cyprus' High Commission in London is making the necessary representations to a media outlet in Britain to prevent the future use of such terminology, the Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, Theodoros Gotsis, told CNA, regarding the participation of Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, in a television programme as "president" of the "trnc", in a reference to the illegal entity set up by Turkey in Cyprus' occupied areas. Asked by CNA to comment, Gotsis said that, as in all similar cases where incorrect terminology 'that adopts the illegality of the separatist regime' is used, the diplomatic missions of Cyprus, and in this case the High Commission in London, is making the necessary representations to the media outlet in question to prevent the use of such terminology in the future. 'Members of the journalist community ought to be better informed to avoid the trap of using such illegal 'titles'', Gotsis noted. Tatar was a guest on GB News where the journalist, Martin Daubney, called him "president of the trnc". T he Turkish Cypriot leader also spoke to the Times with journalist Dominic O'Connell, on some instances questioning Tatar's statements, such as on direct flights and trade, noting that any recognition of the occupied areas would set a dangerous precedent. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. Source: Cyprus News Agency
