Erdogan Hosts Japanese Crown Prince Akishino in Ankara.

ANKARA: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday met Japan's Crown Prince Akishino Fumihito, who is on an official visit to Trkiye. The meeting took place at the presidential complex, as confirmed by a statement from the Turkish presidency. Also present at the meeting were Trkiye's Communications Director Fahrettin Altun, Chief Adviser to the President Akif Cagatay Kilic, and Presidential Chief of Staff Hasan Dogan. According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan presented Fumihito with a document highlighting that Ottoman General Pertev Pasha was honored by Emperor Mutsuhito. The visit by Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko marks their first to Trkiye and coincides with the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. They arrived in Ankara on Tuesday evening and are scheduled to return to Japan on Sunday. The relationship between Japan and Trkiye dates back to the Meiji Era, which spanned from 1868 to 1912. During this period, Prince and Princess Komatsu of Japan visited the Ottoman Em pire, a gesture that was reciprocated by the Ottoman frigate Ertugrul in 1890. Unfortunately, the frigate encountered a typhoon and sank off Wakayama Prefecture, resulting in over 500 deaths. Japanese citizens cared for the survivors, and memorial ceremonies continue to be held in both countries to honor this historic connection. Despite the disruptions caused by World War II, postwar visits by Japanese royals, including Prince Mikasa, have further strengthened the ties between the two countries. They have supported each other during times of crisis, such as Japan's aid after the 1999 Trkiye earthquake and Ankara's assistance following Japan's 2011 tsunami. This visit by the Japanese royal couple underscores the enduring bond and mutual respect between Japan and Trkiye, highlighting their commitment to enhancing bilateral understanding and cooperation.
