Ankara: Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal emphasized the pivotal role Estonia plays as a partner to Trkiye in the Nordics and Baltics, particularly in defense cooperation, during the 36th NATO Heads of State and Government Summit in Ankara. Michal highlighted the importance of the summit in reinforcing allied unity and solidarity among NATO members.
According to Anadolu Agency, Michal noted that the Ankara summit holds significant importance, echoing the sentiment that NATO allies remain united. He recalled Estonia's accession to NATO in 2004 and its participation in the alliance's summit in Trkiye the same year, marking the historical importance of this year's gathering for Estonia. Key priorities discussed at the summit include increasing defense spending, supporting Ukraine, and enhancing the defense industry.
Michal praised Trkiye for its contributions to the air security of Estonia and the Baltic states, emphasizing the strong partnership between the two NATO allies. He detailed the expanding cooperation in defense industries, highlighting that Estonia has become a "reference country" for Turkish armored vehicles. Estonian forces utilize vehicles from Nurol Makina and ARCA Defense, which have been well-received and deemed effective in various roles.
Furthermore, Michal announced that ARCA Defense plans to manufacture 155mm ammunition at Estonia's defense industry park. He reiterated Estonia's position as a top partner for Trkiye in the Nordics or Baltics, given the country's size and strategic importance.
Looking forward to the summit's outcomes, Michal expressed his hope that the Ankara summit would be remembered for demonstrating NATO's unity and strength. He stressed the importance of sending a clear message to adversaries, including Russia, that opposing the alliance would be unwise, with high expectations set for the summit's achievements.
