European Disease Center Weighs Social Media Exit Over Disinformation Concerns.

Brussels: The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is contemplating a withdrawal from the social media platform X due to concerns over disinformation and misinformation, as stated by its director, Pamela Rendi-Wagner, in an interview with Politico. According to Anadolu Agency, Rendi-Wagner highlighted that the platform, formerly known as Twitter, has been instrumental in the spread of both disinformation and misinformation. This has prompted the ECDC to deliberate a potential exit, following in the footsteps of prominent accounts that departed after Donald Trump secured a second term as US president. Rendi-Wagner expressed concerns over the declining trust in scientific institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic, attributing social media as a catalyst for the spread of scientific misinformation. Despite these challenges, she acknowledged that social media has its advantages, enabling the ECDC to engage with broader audiences and communities. The trend of departing from X has been signif icantly influenced by apprehensions regarding owner Elon Musk's relationship with the US president-elect. In response to these concerns, various organizations have announced their decision to leave the platform. The British newspaper The Guardian, German football club St. Pauli, and the London-based Center for Countering Digital Hate have all declared their intentions to cease activity on X.
