Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron commended Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for demonstrating what he described as 'unprecedented' commitments toward peace, following a letter from Abbas that outlined concrete proposals for reform and resolution.

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron shared on X that he received a letter filled with "hope, courage and clarity," marking a decisive moment in the ongoing pursuit of peace. He characterized Abbas's commitments as both 'concrete and unprecedented,' signaling a 'genuine willingness to move forward' towards a sustainable resolution. The letter from Abbas was sent in anticipation of an upcoming United Nations conference on Palestine and the two-state solution, which France and Saudi Arabia will co-host.

Abbas's message emphasized the existential threat facing the Palestinian people, highlighting the jeopardization of peace prospects in the region. He expressed gratitude to France and Saudi Arabia for their leadership and called for a political solution grounded in 'justice, international law and mutual acceptance.' He underscored the need for an 'immediate, comprehensive and permanent ceasefire' in Gaza, the opening of all crossings, unrestricted humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages and prisoners.

Abbas also declared the Palestinian Authority's readiness to take over governance and security in the Gaza Strip, urging Hamas to relinquish its weapons. He advocated for the cessation of the Israeli assault on Palestinian territories and the end of unilateral measures violating international law.

The letter further demanded an end to settlement activities and settler violence, suggesting potential sanctions to deter such actions. Abbas reiterated the right of the Palestinian people to live in freedom and dignity in their homeland, aspiring for Palestine and Israel to coexist as sovereign states in peace. He concluded by supporting the deployment of an international peacekeeping force to implement a peace agreement.
