German Chancellor Urges Wealthy Nations to Bolster Climate Finance at Brazil Summit

Belem: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday called upon affluent industrialized nations to enhance their contributions to the global effort against climate change. Speaking at an international climate summit in Brazil, Merz emphasized the crucial juncture the world currently faces.

According to Anadolu Agency, Merz highlighted Germany's financial commitment to climate action, noting that his government allocated more than £6 billion ($7 billion) last year. Additionally, he announced Germany's endorsement of the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF), an initiative proposed by Brazil, and pledged significant contributions to its success.

Merz stressed the importance of preserving tropical forests while mobilizing private sector funding. He underscored the necessity of collaboration between partners in the Global South and North to achieve climate goals. Furthermore, Merz reaffirmed Germany's commitment to national and EU climate targets, aiming for climate neutrality by 2045 in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

Highlighting innovation and technology as pivotal in addressing climate change, Merz argued that the economy could be a key player in climate protection rather than a hindrance. He expressed confidence in the development of new economic sectors and business models, relying on the innovative capacity of Germany's economy.

The Belem Climate Summit, organized by Brazil, serves as a precursor to the COP30 climate change conference scheduled for November 10-21.
