Beijing: Iran remains serious and steadfast in diplomacy while maintaining full readiness to respond to any 'malicious act,' Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told his Chinese counterpart on Wednesday. Araghchi briefed Wang Yi during a meeting in Beijing on the latest diplomatic efforts and initiatives aimed at ending the US-Israeli war against Iran, including ongoing negotiations mediated by Pakistan between Tehran and Washington.
According to Anadolu Agency, Araghchi emphasized Iran's commitment to both diplomacy and defense, stating, 'Iran, just as it acted decisively in defending itself and remains fully prepared to confront any aggression, is also serious and steadfast in the field of diplomacy.' The top diplomat commended China's stance against the alleged violations of international law by the United States and Israel during the 40-day conflict.
Araghchi expressed optimism that China, during its rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, would continue playing 'a constructive role in preventing further violations of international peace and security.' He later shared on the US social media platform X about holding a 'constructive meeting' with Wang in Beijing, where both sides affirmed Iran's right to uphold its 'national sovereignty and national dignity.'
China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi praised Iran's 'responsible approach' and restated Beijing's support for Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He opposed the use of force and continuation of the 'illegal war,' warning of its broader regional and international repercussions. Wang reiterated China's support for diplomacy and dialogue as the sole means of resolving regional disputes.
The talks also covered bilateral economic and trade cooperation, with both sides agreeing to maintain high-level consultations. Araghchi, in a separate interview with Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, remarked that Chinese officials viewed Iran as having strengthened its international position post-war, demonstrating capabilities and paving the way for 'a new phase' of cooperation with other countries.
Discussions in Beijing also addressed efforts to end the war, ongoing negotiations, sanctions, Iran's nuclear program, and bilateral issues. Notably, the Strait of Hormuz was a 'serious topic' discussed, focusing on respecting Iran's rights and understanding differing perspectives on the issue.
Araghchi's visit preceded a scheduled summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 14-15, amidst tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, which remains blocked. This meeting marked Araghchi's first in-person talks with Wang since the US and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28, following several phone discussions during the conflict.
