Ankara: Iran's permanent mission to the UN blamed the US on Friday for trying to manufacture international backing for its actions against Tehran through a draft UN Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Anadolu Agency, the mission articulated that the US is attempting to project a misleading narrative of broad international endorsement for its actions by leveraging the support of co-sponsors for its politically motivated resolution. The mission expressed concerns that this facade of international support could be used to justify further military actions in the region.
The draft resolution, introduced by the US in collaboration with Bahrain and Gulf countries Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar, claims to defend freedom of navigation in the crucial Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran has warned that nations backing this US-led initiative might be held accountable if tensions rise.
The mission further stated, "Should the U.S. trigger any new escalation, all co-sponsoring States will share international responsibility alongside Washington for the consequences." It emphasized that no political or diplomatic justifications could absolve these countries from their role in enabling what Iran perceives as US aggression.
Tensions in the region have been heightened since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28, leading to retaliatory actions by Tehran against Israel and US allies in Gulf countries, along with the strategic closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire took effect April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. Trump later extended the truce indefinitely while maintaining a blockade on vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports through the strategic waterway.
